Pollution and Air Quality Assessment

Impact of household sources on outdoor air pollution in India

  • Objectives

  1. To determine what fraction of the two major health-damaging outdoor air pollution species (PM2.5/PM10) and ozone can be attributed to household combustion in India
  2. To characterize the village PM pollution due to household combustion in two villages in the continental climate regime that characterizes central India – with frequent ground-level inversions during winter
  • Timeline of the project

2014 -2017
  • Location

Palwal district, Haryana
  • Methods

  • An expanded emissions inventory of household emissions in India by stove/fuel type including, for the first time, precursors for secondary particles and ozone. This will include modeled contributions to total particle and ozone levels in North India based on the new inventory along with evaluation of the main causes of remaining uncertainty
  • An assessment using statistical and physical models informed by year-long measurements and specialized measurements during major seasons of the impact of household emissions on village pollution its associated personal exposures. Measurement and modeling techniques will offer best practices for future assessments in India and elsewhere.
  • By incorporating North Indian population and fuel use distributions, we will explore the total exposure implications of alternative clean cook stove intervention strategies focusing on ambient levels. We will create various counterfactual situations that pair differing levels of adoption with device-specific emissions profiles. We believe this will be an essential tool towards both targeting inventions and finding a ‘critical adoption mass’ required to see true reductions in both emissions and exposures.
