INCLEN Task Force Study on Childhood Obesity

A multi-centric study on its measurements and determinants with reference to cardio-metabolic risk factors

  • Objectives
  1. To develop normogram of body fat (content and distribution) and cardio-metabolic risk factors (blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, lipoproteins, apo-lipoproteins and HBA1C) among Indian children aged 6 to 18 years
  2. To identify the best possible cutoff measures of body fat (content & distribution) that predict unacceptable cardio-metabolic risk factors for defining body fatness (overweight & obese) among Indian children aged 6-18 years.
  3. Build capacity of researchers from partner Institutes in childhood obesity-related health research in India.

  • Methods
  • Study has two components, the quantitative (measurement of childhood obesity) and the qualitative (determinants of childhood obesity). Quantitative data was collected from 3 regions (New Delhi, Shillong and Hyderabad) while qualitative data was collected from 5 regions (New Delhi, Shillong, Hyderabad, Jamnagar and Srinagar). A representative sample of 3851 children (boys 1922 and girls 1929) between 6 to 18 years of age was recruited from local schools. Detailed assessments were done on
    1. anthropometry,
    2. pubertal stage,
    3. blood biochemistry (fasting plasma insulin, plasma glucose, lipid parameters and sub-fractions, uric acid) using semi-automated analyze),
    4. body composition by bio impedance (BIA) (InBody720,body composition analyzer, Biospace),
    5. body composition using DXA (Hologic QDR 4500A) on selected sub samples,
    6. socio-economic status,
    7. media and marketing exposure
    8. food frequency and diet recall, and
    9. physical activity recall.
  • Expected Outcomes

Predictive equations for estimating percentage body fat using Bio-impedance

Study has developed smoothened centile curves using cubic, and/or quadratic polynomial equations to correlate the percent body fat in each centile curves.

Determinants of childhood obesity through analysis of qualitative data (272  In-depth Interviews, 31 FGDs and 116 Informal interviews
