Active AEFI surveillance

Potential association of all cause deaths and hospitalization with routine UIP vaccinations in Kerala and Tamil Nadu

  • Objectives

  1. To compare the all cause death and hospitalization rate 0-7 days and 22-28 days after each dose of pentavalent and OPV vaccination.
  2. To compare the all cause death and hospitalization rate between 8-14 days, 15-21 days and 22-28 days after pentavalent and OPV vaccination.
  3. To compare the all cause death and hospitalization rate between 0-7 days and 7-day intervals from day 8 onwards after every pentavalent and OPV vaccination until the next dose is administered or up to 24 weeks of age or death/hospitalization, whichever occurs first.
  • Timeline

 2015 – 2016
  • Location

The study is being conducted in two districts; Kollam (Kerala) and Coimbatore (Tamilnadu).
  •  Methods

  1. This is a prospective dynamic cohort study in children immunized with pentavalent vaccine and OPV
  2. The study has recruited 30,000 infants, between 6 weeks to 8 weeks, who have received the first dose of pentavalent and OPV vaccine at selected public health facilities or outreach settings.
  3. These infants have received their first dose of UIP vaccines (pentavalent and oral polio vaccine) and were followed-up until four weeks after the third dose of the vaccine or 24 weeks of age. Collected data on illnesses, hospitalisation, deaths and related clinical events.
  • Expected Outcomes

  1. The event rates of outcome of interest (all cause death and all cause hospitalization) for the different risk periods after vaccination
  2. Risk difference for all cause deaths and all cause hospitalization during different weeks (first week, second week and third week) and fourth week after vaccination after each dose of vaccination.
  3. Risk difference for all cause deaths and all cause hospitalization among the study infants vaccinated with UIP between different doses of vaccines.
  4. Association between the all cause death and hospitalization and UIP vaccines
  5. Causes of death in infants aged 6 weeks to 24 weeks and place of death
  6. Causes of hospitalization in infants aged 6 weeks to 24 weeks who receive UIP vaccines
  7. Identification of areas of supplementation in the existing AEFI surveillance
